Asante Ashland Community Hospital is on the far end of town (280 Maple Street). For more specialized care you’ll need to go all the way to Providence Medford Medical Center (1111 Crater Lake Avenue) or Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center (2825 East Barnett Road), both in Medford. However, if you have a medical problem, CALL your insurance company first if possible to make sure they will honor your claim.

Urgent care services are also available at Valley Immediate Care Ashland located in the triangle building across from Omar's (1401 Siskiyou Blvd. #1).

Ashland’s weather is variable during June. High temps during ABC are typically in the 80s, but can range from 60-108°. Overnight lows are typically around 60°, but may range from 45-70°. Skies range from clear to overcast, with an occasional shower or thunderstorm. If you drive up to Crater Lake you’re likely to find snow on the ground. You can’t go wrong if you pack for the heat, but bring a couple of extra layers, including a hooded jacket or sweater, for chilly days and evenings. Make sure you have comfortable walking shoes. Portions of Ashland are quite hilly, but quite walkable if you’re in moderately good shape (which you will be before you leave). Remember you’ll be outdoors most of the day on July 4th, so make sure you have sunblock, sun glasses, a hat, and pants/shorts that will make a comfortable transition from morning rehearsal on the football field to riding/walking alongside our flatbed trucks in the parade. And of course you’ll need indoor-outdoor concert blacks for the two concerts.

Yes. Unless they are crossing against the signal, pedestrians have the right of way at all crosswalks (marked and unmarked). Drivers must allow pedestrians to cross the next lane or reach the nearest sidewalk or median before driving through. This is strictly enforced. Some crosswalks on Siskiyou have flashing caution lights to warn drivers of pedestrians. The Oregon Department of Transportation and KMTR 16 Eugene have online guidelines to help illustrate Oregon pedestrian laws; Ashland is the strictest enforcer of those laws.

U-turns are illegal except where specifically marked (the corner of Walker and Ashland, for instance). Self-service gas pumps are limited to card-lock stations. Oregon gas stations really do pay people to pump your gas for you, so sit back and enjoy it. If that bothers you, it’s only a 20 mile drive to California where you’ll pay more to do-it-yourself. Parking in downtown Ashland can be limited during peak tourist hours; carpooling and walking can be advantageous. The city of Medford places strict limits on street parking, and considers moving your car less than two blocks the same as leaving it in the same space where you started out, but has great deals for all-day parking in their paid lots. As of 2018, Oregon has expanded the the “Move Over or Slow Down Law” to also include any non-emergency vehicle stopped on the side of a highway with hazard lights or emergency signs. The distracted driving law was also expanded to ban handheld use of any electronic device while driving or sitting in traffic, with some exceptions like using a single touch to activate a feature or calling for medical help when no one else is available to make the call.

Recycling drops are located in the upper and lower commons, or you can turn them in at most stores for 10¢ per item (recently expanded from soft drink, water, or beer only to include most 4 oz to 1.5 liter (some up to 3 liter) sealed glass, metal, or plastic beverage containers—find complete list here). Larger stores such as Albertsons and Market of Choice have automated bottle and can returns that print out a receipt redeemable at any checkstand. You can also cash them in at any BottleDrop location (the nearest is in Medford, about 6 blocks west of the mall/In-n-Out).

Oregon’s Indoor Clean Air Act provides smokefree indoor air in all workplaces, restaurants, and bars. This extends to 10 feet from entrances, exits, windows that open, and ventilation intakes. Limited exceptions are granted to some motel rooms, smoke shops, and cigar bars. City ordinance prohibits smoking in all parks and in public spaces in downtown Ashland, including sidewalks, the Plaza and Chautauqua Square, plus all private spaces into which the public is invited. The smokefree laws extend to marijuana and vaping, not just tobacco. Ashland has a growing number of dispensaries where marijuana and cannabis products may be legally purchased. State law no longer bans all marijuana use, but federal law does—as do many employers—and many limits are in place, so don’t just assume that anything goes.
